“The most interesting thing…”

“The most interesting thing about a postage stamp is the persistence with which it sticks to its job.”

Napoleon Hill, an American author born in 1883, was a pioneer in the New Thought Movement, and one of the earliest producers of personal success literature. His work, which includes his classic Think and Grow Rich, examines the power of personal beliefs as a critical catalyst in personal achievement.

Although at the time of his birth, the United States Postal Service was 100 years old, I’m sure the postage stamp choices were fairly limited. Today, in addition to the “forever” stamp which will always provide an adequate amount of postage for a first class letter, we have a wide variety of stamp images to choose from. We also have the option to customize postage stamps with our company logo or whatever image we choose. It’s astounding.

Napoleon Hill is considered by many to be one of the greatest writers on the topic of success. His most famous work, Think and Grow Rich, has sold over 20 million copies. His work on personal beliefs and the role they play in success is legendary.

This quote goes a step further than his famous “Anything the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve,” in that it points to summoning the courage to act and take risks to achieve what we desire.

If you are “waiting for your ship to come in,” how can you suit up, jump in the risky waters, and swim out to it instead?

“Our brains become magnetized with the dominant thoughts we hold in our minds and by means with which no man is familiar, these ‘magnets’ attract to us the forces, the people and the circumstances of life which harmonize with the nature of our dominant thoughts.”

I’ve broken one of my own guidelines to share this quote by Napoleon Hill. It is much longer than the quotes I normally use – and yet a fundamental premise of coaching is being willing to go outside your comfort zone, or break a pattern so a new world can emerge.

Perhaps by breaking a self-imposed rule here, I’ve simply embraced my own coaching in order to bring wise thinking to you and to others.

There is a new TV series on the science channel called Futurescape, narrated by James Woods:

In one of the first episodes they will be reviewing research from New York University on the ability to read our thoughts.

What are your dominant thoughts and how are they manifesting in the reality of your life?

If you could simply make a switch to a more entertaining, engaging and prosperous “channel” in your life, what would the programming be?

Self-confidence can be a slippery slope. When we have too little, we are often paralyzed. If we demonstrate too much, we could be perceived as cocky, arrogant, or closed-minded.

Exercise:

Three strategies to develop and enhance your confidence without going too far include:

1. Working on critical skills and abilities through committed and consistent practice to enhance your competency.
2. Working on your ability to remain calm and centered when faced with events that can trigger upsets and strong emotions.
3. Speaking and acting each day in ways consistent with your core values and fundamental beliefs. They will provide you with both direction and personal power to step confidently through your world.

As a parent, I believe one of our most important jobs is to help develop the capacities of our children to dream and envision a bright and wonderful future.

It is exciting to imagine that we are all born with an inner blueprint that, through our capacity to dream, gets revealed and clarified along life’s journey.

This quote is encouraging all of us to exercise the muscles of our soul and fully realize our capacity to grow, in order to express our fully authentic self.

How can you revisit your exuberant and authentic inner child and recapture (or more fully discover) the blueprint of your soul?

Google the phrase “vision quest” and consider some of the various means to explore this idea further. Feel free to email me (barry@dempcoaching.com) regarding what you discover.
